Ms. Career Girl is Getting Botox!

Ms. Career Girl is Getting Botox! Ok, slow your roll people- Im not getting Botox. Im only 25! Starting Monday, this very site is getting a few nips and tucks which I want to tell you about! After an intial meeting with Matt Cheuvront of lifewithoutpants.com, I temporarily felt deflated and shitty about my one true passion, Ms. Career Girl. Matt was confused about the focus of Ms. Career Girl. He asked why I have posts about buying your first home, next to posts about winter beauty essentials, next to posts about networking. Hmm, he has a point. So after much thought- a lot which came in the middle of the night- I decided Matt was on to something. I finally called my amazing sister Ashley for advice. Without hesitation, she said Ms. Career Girls posts always go back to three things, finding out who you are, what you want, and how to get it. And after that short conversation, I had my first full night of sleep in a long time. No matter what stage of your career you are in, these questions plague a lot of us. Ive discovered in my own short life, that having a sense of who you are and what you want unlocks a whole new area of your life. It makes things much easier because you can simply say no to things that arent aligned with who you are or what you want. Our career is most definitely NOT the only road to happiness, but it certainly does set the back drop to all the other areas of our lives. I believe that the three pilars of well-being start with your career, your finances and your health- all of which you can control. Therefore, the focus of this site is to help you achieve your goals, in addition to: Help you stop being depressed about your current situation and do something about it. To have support in the day-to-day struggles of accomplishing your goals and living your ideal life. To discover the REAL you, not what everyone else wants you to be. To find a career path that you enjoy AND that pays the bills. To hear real people, present real problems, and real solutions. Ms. Career Girl is designed to be a COMMUNITY of support. Therefore, your emails, suggestions, real life problems and solutions are crucial. Dont be afraid to send me an email so we can all talk about it and help you. In addition to your career goals, your goals saving money, getting healthy, and paying down debt are fair game here because for the modern career person, theses areas are all intertwined. Youll also notice a few new pages: Email subscription will now be an option. Sign up so you can get some inspiration from your iPhone or Blackberry each day. The Sighitings page will give links to articles Ive written outside of Ms. Career Girl, along with radio shows/books/magazine articles/events Ive been a part of. The Hire page will show my desire to take my passions for career well-being and social media to the next level. The Favorites page will give links to my favorite things because, after all, I love to shop and especially when Im buying things that make my life easier or more successful. Thanks again for being part of this community when you have the option of being part of a billion others. You guys keep me going and are one of my biggest sources of career happiness. Make it a great day today. And, as always, get in touch with me if you have suggestions or concerns. Nicole

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese You Dont Sound Like a Leader, You Know

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese You Don't Sound Like a Leader, You Know If youve worked hard and have been rewarded with a leadership role, congratulations. Now, every time you open your mouth you can inspire, motivate, persuade and coach others. No pressure, right? It can be intimidating to think that your words now will have much more power. But on the downside, you also face the threat of undermining yourself if you dont learn how totalk like a leader. Without the right words at the right time, your leadership track may be a very short one. As entrepreneur Jim Rohn notes: The challenge of leadership is to be strong but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not a bully; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly. One of the keys to become amore effective leaderis to monitor how others react to what you say. For example, do you feel youre not really being heard? Do you hear that employees are finding you harsh and insulting? Or customers report finding you arrogant? Any of these reactions is a sign that your communication needs to be improved. Lets look at the mistakes youre making that hurt your leadership effectiveness. Dishonesty. One of the things youll quickly learn as a leader is that there are some things you are told not to discuss with employees and the employees will do their best to get you to tell them. Dont lie to employees when they begin to probe just tell them that its something you cannot discuss and change the subject. Its especially important that you dont let your guard down at something like a cocktail event where you admit, Yeah, we never should have hired that guy. Gushing.Constantly using words such as awesome, amazing, unbelievable and incredible can leave you with little to say when something truly needs to be recognized. Juvenile habits, ya know?Using uptalk where your voice ends (read more here)

Look Em in the Eye or Anywhere Else About the Head - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Look ’Em in the Eye or Anywhere Else About the Head - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Eyes are powerful in communicating; no other body parts communicate quite the same. The quickest way to look uninterested, distracted, inattentive, or dishonest is to not meet the other person’s eyes or even face. Though most of us are taught to look people in the eye when speaking with them, few do it. People will liberally notice and comment on other people’s character with observations like, “He can’t look you in the eye. “She can look you in the eye.” “He’s shifty eyed.” “She gives you the evil eye.” “He’s wild-eyed . . . dull eyed . . . has lies in his eyes.” Their impressions cause them to jump to conclusions about other people, even if they are grossly inaccurate. If you think CEOs with all their important work don’t bother with minutiae like eye contact, consider these comments I heard in my interviews: “Only if you are Justin Beiber can you afford to divert your eyes, keep moving, never smile, never engage when you meet me in the hallway.” “I fire eye rollers.” “Sometimes I purposefully look like I’m asleep in a video conference to see if people might say things they wouldn’t say in front of me if I were awake.” “Eyes speak volumes to me. It’s what I trust.” “Don’t look down. You have to face the people you’re torturing.” “If you are always looking around, up, and down, then you better look out in more ways than one.” “When I’m dealing with difficult people, I look them in the eye and wiggle my eyebrows.” As Ive written many times, small things make a big difference. They know you are competent what they are looking for it fit and you ability to look em in the eye is part of that. _____ Benton and Wright, co-authors of The Leadership Mind Switch (McGraw-Hill, 2017)

3 Things You Cant Cram in Life

3 Things You Can’t Cram in Life Do you remember back in high school or college when you had an exam coming up, and you were too busy having fun to study all along the way? If you were like most of us, then you crammed for the exam. That is, you waited until the last minute to cram all the knowledge into your head before the test. Now that we're all grown up and have these very busy careers and busy lives, I think a lot of us still do the same thing when it comes to other areas of our life. I feel like I get so busy at work that I don't have time to go to the gym, to read that book, to take my dog for a walk in the park, spend extra time with my kids, learn how to knit, whatever it might be. I might even really, really, really want to do some of those things, in fact, most of those things. But I keep putting it off. Some things you just can’t cram Just the other day I read an article that said there are things that you just cannot cram in life. It was such a light bulb moment for me, and I want to share it with you. Unlike exams, where it felt okay to cram and learn things in a burst, in life there are some fundamentally important things that we want to have like relationships, good health, and any number of things that we really value. Yet we're putting them off just like it was another exam. The important thing is if you and I keep doing that, we're going to wake up one day, look back and say, Where did that time go? What was I thinking? What was I doing? I was doing the wrong things!” I don't want that to happen to you, me or any of us. That’s why I want to highlight three things in life that you just cannot cram. Investing in relationships The first one is relationships. You can't just pay no attention to somebody and then all of a sudden spend 100 hours in a row paying attention to them. It doesn't work that way. People tend not to like that. Instead, it's about showing your caring, showing your love, spending the time all along the way. This might apply to your children or your partner. It might apply to your clients. Thinking back to my experiences in my banking days, clients would not look kindly on my not calling them for a year, and then all of a sudden hearing from me when they were about to do a big transaction. That didn't work very well. And the same thing holds true with other relationships. Becoming fit The second thing you cannot cram is your fitness and your overall health, including things like your cardiovascular fitness and strength. For example, in my mother's generation, women just didn't do exercise along the way. She used to be a sprinter back in college, but then when she got out of school people just didn't go to the gym or do yoga back then. Then at the age of 79 she started working out because she started to realize she needed more core strength to keep from falling. Yes, she gained muscle mass and her fitness improved, but imagine if she had been fitting exercise in on a weekly basis, maybe even a daily basis, all those decades. Sleep is also part of fitness, and you can't cram sleep. You can't stay up all night for five nights in a row and then sleep for five days. It doesn't work that way. Having the relevant experience The third thing you can't cram is experiences. Here, I’m thinking about the kinds of work experiences you need to have in order to become that more senior person you aspire to. Let's say you want to become a general manager one day. You’ll need to have had experience in the relevant functions you’re managing. Or maybe you want to become the top in your field in a particular area. Then nothing substitutes for having that depth of experience, and you can't cram that. Either way, you have to do the work. You have to show up. And you have to make sure that you're in the right place and have the right platform to gain all those experiences. The thing is, you can only do that over time. Incorporate what matters into your life Those are just three areas that I have come across that you just can't cram in life. Nor would you want to because it could be really fun to be enjoying better relationships, fitness and experiences all along. So, if you are someone who's a doer, an achiever or chasing a big prize, then make sure you take a moment to step back and recognize what really matters to you long-term. And if something really matters to you long-term, but you're not doing anything on a day-to-day or week-to-week basis right now, then think about how can you incorporate that into your life. It doesn't have to take a lot of time, but you do have to make it part of your normal habits and your normal behavior. Doing that makes your life richer, and helps you be happier and more successful. Wouldn’t that be great? Leave me a comment below to share what really matters to you, and how you’re going to work that into your daily life.
